london-based electronic songwriter ryan lee west’s most personal work to date comes in the form of a mini-album titled night melody.

rival consoles is electro acid-smith ryan lee west from leicester. influenced by impressionists like claude debussy and modern electronic artists such as autechre and squarepusher, he created his unique signature. a playful and brutal mix of idm acid beats and warm, emotive synth string arrangements. in february 2017 he released and toured the more quirky vemeer ep under his second musical alias aparatec, which sold like hot cakes and earned him a lot of fans. the 10 inch vinyl includes a download code.

continuing on from his odyssey ep released in 2013, ryan lee west aka rival consoles creates atmosphere and space whilst exploring waves of sound and rhythm, and the power of colour. with sonne ryan creates music to structure itself around a pulse, rather than the pulse being the defining point.

like many electronic artists, ryan lee west aka rival consoles spent his early years experimenting with idm, glitch and dance, but one consistent element in his musical journey has been his desire to create a more organic, humanised sound. through these experimentations he has found a process of producing electronic music that feels close to this urge. west engages his hands directly with instruments and is very selective about what he then records into the computer. he reduces musical parts even further, leaving enough space around the sound for it to breath.
odyssey is a reflection of west’s quest to create atmosphere and space from minimal arrangements. ‘i don’t like music to sound overly laboured, so i restrict how much is going on. i’m kind of obsessed with the idea of reduction.’ this 5-track ep was mastered by naweed.

the first release from lisbon based doozy cult sets the bar high with an ep from 100hz lee renacre, who has been firmly putting out records since the late 80 s. with a very characteristic funky approach to house and techno, -paradisiac ep- doesn t fall short to some of 100hz s best work. side a contains two of his most well kept gems, both tracks produced around 1995 with fellow studio partner james chapman.on the b side we see lee going solo with his most recent studio work, two live takes of analog technological goodness, bringing depth to what is an exquisite aural adventure.

emotional rescue and jamwax ends their capo disco series by returning to glen adams and his cover of bob marley’s classic. the early 70s lee perry produced original raw sound is taken to the disco reggae dancefloors of the early 80s with a bottom heavy jam, while his capo crew works a killer dub flipside.

detroit duo ataxia offer up their kodak moment ep via visionquest this march, accompanied by an edit from label co-founders shaun reeves and ryan crosson. eric ricker and ted krisko aka ataxia have been at the forefront of the contemporary house and techno scene for some time, racking up releases on some of the leading labels across the globe such as leftroom, nervous, culprit and play it say it, making the duo one of detroits finest exports in recent years. here we see them making their debut on visionquest, the label of fellow detroit natives ryan crosson, shaun reeves and lee curtiss. vhs leads the package with murky synth swells, resonant synth sweeps and fluttering square wave bass tones at its core as shuffled drums carry the ever-evolving hypnotic groove along. the original mix of kodak moment follows, shifting the focus over to snaking bass lines, mind-bending, modulating synth whirrs and dynamic, choppy percussion throughout. reeves & crossons edit of kodak moment then rounds out the release, stripping things back to ethereal atmospherics and shuffled drums whilst subtly stirring in the original’s hooky bass groove as the interpretation unfolds.

the b side of this ep is more focussed on minimalistic house music. one half of tsempoo named tserg already did his wonderful debut ep on deeptrax. together with a friend he releases music under his second alias named tsempoo. rich p, who will do multiple releases on deeptrax ending the ep with a simplistic though wonderful handcrafted techno. an ep full of heavy drum rhythms, moody synth lines and ambient soundscapes throughout.

paper tree sneaked out into the world for a moment a few years back and then vanished. lee burridge loved the track so much that he continued to harass rebelski, sometimes standing outside his window in the flower bed, for weeks on end until he finally agreed to let lee release it on all day i dream. not content with a single track lee went back to rebelskis garden and tapped on the window repeatedly until he agreed to make some more beautiful tracks. obviously pestering producers in this manner bares fruit. the paper tree ep ranges from a beautiful solitary solo piano piece that wouldn t be amiss in a british period piece drama where someone dies unexpectedly leaving the survivors to deal with it, all the while maintaining their stiff upper lip. fly the kite made us want to go outside and do just that. so we did. it was epic. circles and squares joins paper tree as one of those dance floor moments best experienced with ones eyes closed. myriad is the sound of a young lady robots jewelry box (yes, we predict robots will be wearing jewelry in the future) that she(bot) pines to hear when she s all grown up and rusty. omoshiroi is, well, its just so damn pretty. good work rebelski. good work.
